The roundabout came into sight. He can hear his heartbeat now. Thump thump dup dup thump. Gently applying pressure to the accelerator, the dark purple Toyota Prado motions forward with more purpose. It is near. He runs the procedures quickly through his mind: brake, turn, release, brake turn, release. 100m. 50m.
The Prado glides to the outside of the SS3 roundabout. He brakes, turns, releases. However, instead of the 'piu yee' stuff you see in the World Rally Championships, the Prado spins to the side and across the curb. BANG. KRRAAAAKKKK. BOING. The Prado had crashed into a tree. The unfortunate tree, disgusted with this human for bribing the driving instructors, decides to throw him a limb. The thick branch crashed down spectacularly on the Prado, trapping him inside. It was 3am.
At a mamak stall nearby, Hamyu thought he heard a yelp. Like a muffled "Help!". Thinking too much teh-ping is making him hallucinate, he excuses himself from the table, apparently to the loo. As he came out of the bushes, Hamyu saw it. The Prado and the tree. Not even thinking of calling his malat friends, Hamyu races forward. Peering inside the Prado's window, Hamyu could see a mere shape of a giant male genitalia. "I knew it. It's Dicky." As Hamyu tries in vain to open the Prado's door, the tree spoke: "Reveal six random things about yourself. And I'll let him go. Damn you P drivers."

Studio Ghibli pt.2: The Underrated (1991 -1995)
The series continues with the lesser known, but still top-class Ghibli productions, during the years between Totoro and Mononoke. I have now decided my dream job is to write movie reviews.
ONLY YESTERDAY
(Omohide Poro Poro, 1991, Isao Takahata)
Another Ghibli breakthrough, Only Yesterday is animation for adults. It tells the story of an office girl taking a sabbatical off to the countryside. On the way there and throughout her stay, she reflects on flashbacks of her childhood. This incredibly realistic drama owes much of its brilliance to its storytelling. Taeko could recount her past experiences clearly, until the point where she feels like it was 'only yesterday', hence the title. The nostalgia is complemented by the luscious countryside landscapes, as she r
eflects on the absurdity of growing up blues. The flashbacks of first times - cutting a pineapple, being fancied by a boy, her first period; and memories like being poor in maths, and acting in a stage play, slowly sculptures Taeko's character into somebody we all can relate to. The animation is almost life-like (smaller eyes), and I was not used to watching it the first time. On a second viewing, I discarded the concept of typical Miyazaki excitement, and found a touching human drama reminding me that the past is just another step to the future. A winner from Takahata.
Fave stuff: Although very much a drama, the entire movie is kept light-hearted with the humour of everyday life.
Verdict: An animated achievement in storytelling, which gets better with repeated viewings. 10/10
PORCO ROSSO
(Kurenai no Buta, 1992, Hayao Miyazaki & Tony Bancroft)
Set in 1929 Italy, this is a sto
ry of a WWI pilot with a pig's head. The common theory is that Porco was disillusioned with life (Italy had turned fascist), and cursed himself to be a pig. What initially was very funny to look at, turned into a terrific war drama. Porco's character is the man who has significant baggage, his childhood ideals shattered and twisted, where trust had gone down the drain. He is still popular with the ladies, the pirates, an American hotshot, and has two girls willing to love him. To me, Porco Rosso is a pleasant Ghibli surprise - stunning recreation of the Adriatic coast, and one of the finest Joe Hisaishi soundtracks. The story is laid-back, the action sequences tame, letting the characters float to the surface of the film. Each personality is unique, Gina's caring to Curtis' brashfulness, Fio's innocence to 'The Boss' comic. If there was a Best Actor award for animations, it would go to Porco, his nonchalant exterior hiding a hurt soul determined to set things right. The expression 'fascist pig' takes a new meaning from now on.
Fave stuff: Porco's hilarious yet deep lines, "I rather be a pig than a fascist." and "A pig that cannot fly is just a pig."
Verfict: Pigs can fly. Casablanca style. 10/10
OCEAN WAVES / I CAN HEAR THE SEA
(Umi ga Kikoeru, 1993, Tomomi Mochizuki)
This made-for-TV movie by a young Ghibli production team tells a story about a love triangle between two friends and a new transfer student. The subtle storytelling of adolescent romance, and snippets of high school excursions, are ty
pical teenagers storyline. What is different is Rikako's character, the girl who transferred reluctantly from urban Tokyo to rural Kouchi. She is cocky and stubborn, a product of divorced parents, and she resents the rural life and her school. However, Rikako possesses the female charm all pretty girls have, which hardly makes her a likeable character, albeit a more real one, that most of us know from someone. My gripe with Ocean Waves is that this could well be as good a movie if acted out in real life by dependable actors. Despite this drawback, it still is a breezy movie of teen romance, able to strike a chord with anyone that has been through high school.
Fave stuff: The scene in Tokyo with Rikako, her ex, and Taku having tea. The ackwardness and to an extent, childishness of their actions, amost ridicules the follies of youth.
Verdict: A breath of fresh air in the teen romance genre. 7/10
POM POKO
(Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko, 1994, Isao Takahata)
A group of tanukis (raccoon dogs) try to preserve their settlement as urban development threatens to unsettle them. Tanukis are belived to be able to change to any form they want, and is rich in Japanese folklore. For that reason, this bizarre animation feels irrelevant to me, someone that know nothing about Japenese myt
hs. Luckily, the mischief of the tanukis keep the 2-hr runtime entertaining enough. The multitude of plots they hatch to disrupt the humans are hilarious, culminating in a monster parade including one-eyed umbrellas and bearded spiders. (full list of monsters HERE, picture HERE) However, by the time that scene arrived, I was already feeling jaded as the tanukis could never win, and their antics always border on the ridiculously bizarre. I think Takahata wanted to emphasize the ecology problem, but I felt the story was rooted too much in folklore, which robbed the free-spiritedness off most Ghibli productions.
Fave stuff: The initial battle scene, monster parade, and giant Neko (cat) plot - so outrageous that it became laugh-out-loud funny.
Verdict: Fun but ultimately inconsequential animation. The run-time can use some editing too. 6/10
WHISPER OF THE HEART
(Mimi wo Sumasabe, 1995, Yoshifumi Kondou)
A girl finds out the library books she read have all been previously loaned out by the same person. This romantic plot runs parallel with the story of the girl growing up, seemingly a favourite theme of Ghibli movies. Similiar to Kiki, the maturing journey unfolds in Shizuku's daily life - family, school, friends, boys, and fantasising. Naturalistic and beautifully animated (of a Tokyo town), Whisper of the Heart can truly m
esmerize the soul. Although ackwardly paced, the movie climax in a stirring rendition of John Denver's Country Road, ala Nihon-style. The fantasy sequences featuring The Baron is a delight to watch, especially the background illustrations by this guy. The movie's moral is also strongly presented towards the end, when Shizuku forces herself to write a novel in 3 wks. Her determination pays off, thus reinforcing her self-belief. In the end Seiji suddenly proposes to Shizuku, a brave ode to commitment and fullfilment, then the film closes with a tone of finality - two things not so common these days.
Fave stuff: Love the wonderfully arranged song and fantasy sequence, but none can compare with the grandfather clock. Another prop to put in my future living room.
Verdict: Subtle tale of decisions and responsibility, just what I need these days. 9/10

Studio Ghibli pt.1: The Classics (1984 - 1989)
Finally, the long-awaited series is out! At least I was waiting for it. In line with my obsessions with films and trilogies (Asian Auteurs series: pt.1, pt.2, pt.3), I present...
Shyan's Studio Ghibli collection reviews.
No disrepect to Pixar (Disney SUCKS), but the world's top animation studio has been enthralling viewers for the past 20 yrs with beautiful visuals, heartwarming stories, memorable hero / heroines, enchanting music, and the uncanny ability to simply charm audiences. Studio Ghibli is the brainchild of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and its history is detailed in the cult fans website - Nausicaa.net. I'll attempt to review all movies that Ghibli has produced, except the newest one released in July '06 (Japan). My review style touches little on the story, just what I felt about it. GHIBLI FOREVER!!
NAUSICAA OF THE VALLEY OF WIND
(Kaze no Tani no Naushika, 1984, Hayao Miyazaki)
The very opening shot of a dodo-like bird, followed by a forest with giant bugs, immediately transports viewers to a magical faraway land. The opening credits exhibit illustrations inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, brilliant and moving. Based on Miyazaki's own long-running manga (1982-1994!), Nausicaa tells a tale of war and the environment. The land is polluted, forests emit hazardous air, giant bugs are everywhere, all because of the destruction mankind wreaked upon the land during war. Nausicaa is a Joan of Arc-type character, the girl heroine who can manipulate air
flow and has a kind heart, so much so that even giant bugs love her. The story is exciting and brilliantly told, albeit the second half of the movie has a very heavy undertone. The animation is outstanding for its time, and Joe Hishaishi marks his first collaboration with Miyazaki, with many more to come. As the credits roll, the subtle message I got was ironic: humans, self-elect king of all creatures, end up being threatened by bugs, because they don't respect the environment and bugs in the first place. The environmentalist message will recur in Mononoke, thank goodness without bugs.
Fave stuff: Nausicaa's secret garden and the 'mehve', a jet glider which some crazy ppl are attempting to build now!
Verdict: War movie interlaced with beautiful forests and kindred spirits, although Nausicaa's abilities seemed quite far-fetched. 9/10
LAPUTA: CASTLE IN THE SKY
(Tenkuu no Shiro Rapyuta, 1986, Hayao Miyazaki)
Treasure hunt, pirates and soldiers, innocent romance and flying objects - sounds like any other cartoon? Only it's NOT. Miyazaki stamps his trademarks in this remarkable animation about ppl getting to the mythical floating island Laputa, each with their own agenda. European-style towns
, lush landscapes, hero boy saves cute girl, weird bushy characters, WW-style soldiers, girl cleaning dirty rooms - all Miyazaki themes are present. This was the first film that really got me into Ghibli, previously having only watched Spirited Away. The animation is to die for, I really wanted to go to Laputa the first time I saw it. Laputa's main theme was ringing in my ears weeks after I heard it. The film's full of memorable scenes: Pazu playing the trumpet at daybreak, escape from Tedis Fortress, first glimpse of Laputa through the clouds, robot giving Sheeta flowers, and the full-action ending. Brilliance.
Fave stuff: Laputa itself. And the superb score, always ringing in my ears.
Verdict: A formulaic plot injected a dose of Miyazaki magic, sheer fun and adventure. DIE Disney! 10/10
MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO
(Tonari no Totoro, 1988, Hayao Miyazaki)
Right after the white mini totoro appears to May, I just smiled through the next 80 mins. And that's no mean feat. The highly uncharacteristic Ghibli movie (no war!) is the CUTEST movie EVER. The sheer lightness and heartwarming smile reflects the innocence of childhood. Not much happens here, dad moves into a countryside 'haunted house' to get over his mindblock, whilst mum is recovering from
sickness in a hospital. The two lil'uns encounter totoros, and everything else later is pure fun. Anything King Totoro does is cute - sleeping, turning while sleeping, opening his eyes abit, opening his eyes big big, opening his mouth to scream, holding a leaf above his head, holding an umbrella... seriously, King Totoro = KAWAI DESU NE. May is also super cute, and the Japanese voice actress should get an Academy Award for her determined naughty kid voice. Oh, and the black moth balls also make their first cameo appearance.
Fave stuff: Would you believe it, Totoro isn't even the cutest thing in the movie! That honour goes to the amazing ten-legged, invisible, swift-as-wind Cat Bus!!!
Verdict: The CUTEST movie EVER, watch anytime to feel good. 10/10
GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES
(Hotaru no Haka, 1988, Isao Takahata)
When Seita screws his face up while having a sour sweet, his bitterness was gone, but only for a flash. When Seita starts dreaming of fighting for his country, reality snaps back at him, at his responsibility to take care of his lil' sis. When Setsuko said, "Why did Mother and fireflies die so fa
st?", she was also sapped of her will to live. Grave of the Fireflies is a tragic recount of a pair of siblings during WWII in Kobe, Japan (based on a true story). It depicts a life where hope is not allowed to exist because of circumstances. It depicts the degradation of human beaviour in war. It depicts the dependency that comes with responsibility, and how much truth can hurt. It is the ultimate anti-war movie, even more so than Schindler's List. Every shot of animation is painstakingly beautiful, every piece of dialogue essential in capturing the Japanese nationalist of that time. It is all the more tragic that Seita's pride, which eventually led to his death, mirrored the Japanese myopia towards their own actions during WWII.
Fave Stuff: The use of shadowy colours to illustrate night-time events, and the tear-jerking one-minute tribute to Setsuko after her death.
Verdict: One of the BEST movies of ALL-TIME. Period. 11/10
KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE
(Majo no Takkyuubin, 1989, Hayao Miyazaki)
A girl witch leaves home to find a new town, so she can establish herself as a proper witch. Remove the fantasy element, and a lovely tale is unvealed about a young girl's road to independence. In the current age where temporary jobs are in abundance, financial independence does not equal spiritual independence. Striving to know one's identity in this mass of bodies, where even friends are temporary, is reminiscent of us struggling to grow up in today's society. Kiki is only good at one thing - flying, and we follow her journey towards finding her niche, her growing-up. The scenic european-style city has its kindred spirits among the hustle bustle, and the jungle represents the getaway quiet spot we need to hide in once in a while. As usual, artwork is top quality, the beautiful city a combination of Stockholm, Lisbon and Paris. Each character plays an important role in sha
ping Kiki's character, symbolised in the ending where Gigi the cat could no longer talk. OR rather Kiki could no longer understand Gigi, because she's grown up and discarded her voice of doubt, manifested previously in Gigi.
Fave stuff: Ursula's painting "The Ship Flying over the Rainbow" is magnificent. Anybody ever sees it in large print, pls buy it and I'll hang it in my living room, when I own one.
Verdict: Heartwarming growing up journey, typically captivating Miyazaki feature. 9/10

Not much happens here, dad moves into a countryside 'haunted house' to get over his mindblock, whilst mum is recovering from
sickness in a hospital. The two lil'uns encounter totoros, and everything else later is pure fun. Anything King Totoro does is cute - sleeping, turning while sleeping, opening his eyes abit, opening his eyes big big, opening his mouth to scream, holding a leaf above his head, holding an umbrella... seriously, King Totoro = KAWAI DESU NE. May is also super cute, and the Japanese voice actress should get an Academy Award for her determined naughty kid voice. Oh, and the black moth balls also make their first cameo appearance.Fave stuff: Would you believe it, Totoro isn't even the cutest thing in the movie! That honour goes to the amazing ten-legged, invisible, swift-as-wind Cat Bus!!!
Verdict: The CUTEST movie EVER, watch anytime to feel good. 10/10
GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES(Hotaru no Haka, 1988, Isao Takahata)
When Seita screws his face up while having a sour sweet, his bitterness was gone, but only for a flash. When Seita starts dreaming of fighting for his country, reality snaps back at him, at his responsibility to take care of his lil' sis. When Setsuko said, "Why did Mother and fireflies die so fa
st?", she was also sapped of her will to live. Grave of the Fireflies is a tragic recount of a pair of siblings during WWII in Kobe, Japan (based on a true story). It depicts a life where hope is not allowed to exist because of circumstances. It depicts the degradation of human beaviour in war. It depicts the dependency that comes with responsibility, and how much truth can hurt. It is the ultimate anti-war movie, even more so than Schindler's List. Every shot of animation is painstakingly beautiful, every piece of dialogue essential in capturing the Japanese nationalist of that time. It is all the more tragic that Seita's pride, which eventually led to his death, mirrored the Japanese myopia towards their own actions during WWII.Fave Stuff: The use of shadowy colours to illustrate night-time events, and the tear-jerking one-minute tribute to Setsuko after her death.
Verdict: One of the BEST movies of ALL-TIME. Period. 11/10
KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE(Majo no Takkyuubin, 1989, Hayao Miyazaki)
A girl witch leaves home to find a new town, so she can establish herself as a proper witch. Remove the fantasy element, and a lovely tale is unvealed about a young girl's road to independence. In the current age where temporary jobs are in abundance, financial independence does not equal spiritual independence. Striving to know one's identity in this mass of bodies, where even friends are temporary, is reminiscent of us struggling to grow up in today's society. Kiki is only good at one thing - flying, and we follow her journey towards finding her niche, her growing-up. The scenic european-style city has its kindred spirits among the hustle bustle, and the jungle represents the getaway quiet spot we need to hide in once in a while. As usual, artwork is top quality, the beautiful city a combination of Stockholm, Lisbon and Paris. Each character plays an important role in sha
ping Kiki's character, symbolised in the ending where Gigi the cat could no longer talk. OR rather Kiki could no longer understand Gigi, because she's grown up and discarded her voice of doubt, manifested previously in Gigi.Fave stuff: Ursula's painting "The Ship Flying over the Rainbow" is magnificent. Anybody ever sees it in large print, pls buy it and I'll hang it in my living room, when I own one.
Verdict: Heartwarming growing up journey, typically captivating Miyazaki feature. 9/10

犯贱
当一个人无法接受他人的想法时，他在犯贱。
当一个人有了小房车还买红跑车，他在犯贱。
当一个人陷入只有一面的恋爱时，他在犯贱。
当一个人为一个未发生的危机怕，他在犯贱。
当一个人把梦想建立于占有拥要，他在犯贱。
当一个人后悔懊丧至到无法自拔，他在犯贱。

当一个人只会牵挂不会问候聆听，他在犯贱。
犯贱，是人之本性。父母强迫孩子追逐自己曾经拥有的梦想，忽略了孩子也有梦想，也是人。为了看不到的土地，和用不完的钱财，多少大亨花尽毕生心血，临死前家园有什么树都不知道。一个人储心积血计划报仇，怎知刚要开枪，仇家反被人撞死。少年大都有恋爱的浪漫理想，追求的奉献所有却没获取回报，或是，被追的抛眉撒娇却最终觉得对不住人。朋友间各自把心声倾心相吐，一个把秘密张扬了，闹得大家灰土灰脸。公司上下谈论某某的是非，自己还去插上几句，下次看到一班职员和某某聚集，就提心吊胆想谁会背叛你。史上许多战争十千兵卒把全城池一万人灭口，不知有没人想过，左右是个死，大家拼命或许还有生存的机会。以各种手段获得最高权位者，无有一个不担心随时都会给某人在背后给人插上一刀。喝闷酒解愁，驾车回家时撞倒人。胡思乱想亲人是不是快乐，看到时他人其实很享受，才发现头上的白发是白费的。
犯贱，是人生快乐的一堵墙。不犯贱，就没有忧愁，没有恐惧，没有愤怒，没有嫉妒。工作是为了生存，不是为了荣华富贵。孝顺是给父母看到自己成了一个有用有主见的人，并非把自己的一面盖起来掩饰自己。学习是给自己对一样东西有认识，改进那样东西，不是拿来炫耀或死背。义气是与朋友成长的默契，互相提醒与聆听，不是朋友要去杀人你在后头把风。对一个组织忠心不是因为有利益，而是那个组织有代表你某些理想。失恋是发现世界上有一个人不适合你，还有上亿人有可能与你配合。追求理想是有原则的，有人反对必有其因，听听一下也是好的。假期是为了放松自己，和亲人谈心吃饭，欣赏大自然之美，不是花几小时塞车逛街，花钱呼吸污染空气，更不是呆在家睡十二小时的觉。
当你放开你的心，坚持己有的少许原则，把未知数交给天主，你就会看到这世界是多么美！自然而然，你要分享这个美，就会提起心情去帮助应该帮助的人。那些可怜的人，还正犯贱多于安详的人，教他们认识生命的短促与追求钱财或认可的愚蠢。

看了李某的分析，要说我的“犯贱论“根他的想法是相似的。“犯贱论“要说的就是人的痛苦和悲哀都是自己找来的 - ‘自寻烦恼‘这词形容得很是恰当。人的麻烦很少是为环境所致，都是自己觉得自己方式是对的，坚持导致悲哀。要使人生快乐就要少犯贱，就是要学会自制和接受，发掘爱的基础。简单爱！！
Finished watching the fantastic 26-ep anime "Trigun". Really enjoyed it. Just like Vash the Stampede says: "LOVE and PEACE!!"

"Sushi. That's what my ex-wife called me - cold fish." - Blade Runner Rick DeckardBeing an ardent Star Wars fan, I can't believe I haven't watch the other sci-fi flick that made Harrison Ford famous. Blade Runner was out-of-this-world. A typical storyline: future humans literally make human-like "friends" called replicants. Bad replicants rebel, our hero Deckard is assigned to wipe them out. What is different about this film is the emotional element, and life-probing questions it poses. The manufacturer's motto is "More human than human". But what defines human? Emotional responses? Goodness? Quest for survival? Director Ridley Scott created a superbly detailed futuristic Earth, dark and murky because of pollution, where technology cannot repair nature. Which mirrors the concept where replicants cannot change the nature of man. Harrison Ford turns in a wonderful performance, deeply troubled with his killer's life, but still exudes his Han Solo/Indy Jones charm when a social situation calls for it. The supporting casts were solid, each displaying the 'pei'-ness of their pathetic existence. However, the standing ovation goes to Scott, for integrating an intriguing drama into a simple sci-fi action flick, without the use of CGI. 10/10.

Deft and Peppered
Freakin' exhausting, yet max satisfaction back-to-back gigs.

Me being the smart alec, we were 9 mins late for the concert!! Missed Hexagram, but the rest of the songs were just so brilliantly executed that made my night an unforgettable one. Been my dream to see the real Chino (Moreno) since I first heard Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) 8 yrs ago. Chi creating the dark atmosphere, Abe's pounding beats, Steph's vicious riff-raffing. But above all, Chino's melodic screams and gibberish really brought the house down. The varied setlist was also impressive: crowd-pleaser My Own Summer (Shove It), heavy metal Korea, threatening Bloody Cape, moody Change (In the House of Flies), Sade cover No Ordinary Love, and the 'sucky' ending 7words. At the end of the show, me and Phing hung around for some celeb-spotting, except that I wasn't wearing specs and she doesn't know how Defts look like!! Long story short, Chino WALKED PAST US!!! and we were too dungu to do anything bout it. Nevertheless, simply wonderful gig for one of my all-time fave bands. Too bad they didn't play Digital Bath or Teething (all-time fave 'noisy' song).

Simmering anticipation from the very start after we collected our tickets from the box office. Sitting around, chick-y Nando's staff were distributing (advertising) free wings, wearing t-shirts printed "Red Hot Peri-peri Peppers", and the amusing captions "give it away, give it away, give it away...now" haha. More laughs ensured after the doors opened and we were seating in front of the stage, with 4 inflatables bouncing around the crowd, or onto the 'beer guy'. A really bad group with a horribly gay frontman were opening, I thank them for spoiling the mood quite abit. Flea and John started jamming around 8.45pm, to mark a pleasant entrance to a fantastic opening set. Can't Stop, Dani California, Charlie, Scar Tissue, 21st Century, Otherside..as if that wasn't high enough, they followed with some more happening jams, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, then Me and my, me and my, me and my Friends. Any remaining gig chi left from the Defts gig was now totally gone and sapped to my bone's core. For the next hour, I was basically trying to keep my balance, wipe other ppl's sweat off my brow, and enjoy a musical journey with the Peppers. Blue-cap Chad and pixie-suit Flea were at their pumping best, and soulful John dishes out his orgasmic solos with careless abandon. The dissapointment of the night was Anthony though, he looked fatigued throughout and was unable to complete most of the popular choruses. Still, it was an insignificant letdown by the time By the Way came around, where the crowd was at its absolute rowdy madcap. The sing/dance-along encore of Under the Bridge and Give It Away was awesome, and tired Anthony left the stage early for the rest to round off the gig. A crowd-pleaser and fantastic concert from the legends, how proud I am to say I've seen them twice.
